Day 5 - Garland

Is it just me, or are birds somewhat Christmasy? Maybe its that flash of color against the snow, or the zillion illustrations we have all seen of partridges in pear trees. Just in case I am the only one who feels that way about birds, this one is posing with a cranberry-and-popcorn garland just like us kids used to make. I loved this activity. You'd dig out the sewing box and the button jar (or marshmallow fluff container, as it may have been), and dig around for the right buttons for tying off the ends. Thread the needle with black thread, knot the button at one end, and then. . . then get really frustrated poking your fingers with the needle as you force it through a cranberry, and then watching another pouf of popcorn break off the string, disrupting your carefully calibrated alternating pattern. My oldest brother always made these super-duper-long garlands. I could never do more than a few feet without getting them tangled up on themselves. But really, it was fun.

I think cranberry and popcorn garlands are a lovely study in contrasts of color, shape, and texture. I realize not everyone shares that opinion. Either way, when its time to take the tree down, you can toss them outside for the birds to enjoy. Bonus points if anyone can name the species in the print. (The bonus points will be awarded to me.)

Nice garlands. I have a couple for you to try. A nice one is berries. Another(which is my favourite)is candy canes.

I love the idea of the garland E. I was thinking maybe I could dye to popcorn different colors to make it like a rainbow.

Hi El -

I was thinking about the cran/pop garlands the other day. I saw it mentioned in the paper or something and I was wondering how it would work outdoors (we have a tiny, purple, metallic tree inside - so no good there). We have some nice bushes around the front we could decorate, and if they didn't get eaten right away they might look OK - but rain might do them in also.
