One day recently, while doing research for this blog, I happened upon a site for kids with crafts from around the world. I saw a link for "Irish Christmas Craft." Oh, I thought, great! Maybe I can incorporate a bit of my heritage into one of my projects. So, I click on the link and the name of the project is "Turnip Candle Holder." Turnip candle holder? Yeah, that's right. No maidens crowned in holly and candles for us. We're all about the root vegetables.

So anyway, here's a variation on the idea. I think the tangerines have potential, if one could find the right candles. I couldn't find anything between the size of an 8-inch taper and a birthday cake candle. That's a button acting as a candle collar.
But enough about the Irish. I actually chose "Candle" for today's theme because tonight marks the beginning of Hanukkah. My main project today is a driftwood menorah. It may not be strictly to code, so consider it as project inspiration only. Here none of the candles are lit (just tealights to provide illumination for the photo), I've just placed them for demonstration purposes. I think it would be okay except for the shamash candle being off to the side of the rest of them. I think they should all be lined up. If you are making one for your own Hanukkah celebration, you probably know the answer to that anyway.

For the first time in my life, I live where I can see the ocean on a daily basis, and I wanted to find some way to incorporate a bit of that into one of my projects. So today, with another wind storm bearing down on southern Vancouver Island, I headed down to Albert Head Lagoon, the most easily accessible beach in the area. It was great down there, deserted, pouring with rain, with waves crashing. And laden with driftwood.

Here's the detail around the blue candle. The shell is actually from a beach we visited in Connemara when I went to Ireland last year for the first time. So I guess there's a bit of Ireland in there after all.
