While we're in Scandinavia, let's visit the Norwegian Snowflake. This wine gift wrapper/cozy is made from what used to be a snowflake-patterned sweater found at the Salvation Army. One wash cycle later, it was a big piece of wool felt, just waiting to be remade into something else.

Some call it fulling, some call it felting. I call it funny. Here are a couple of other sweaters that have been through the hot wash/cold rinse cycle. I love the revised proportions. I feel like I'm making clothes for well-dressed chimps.

In the wash, the wool fibers are shrunken and agitated, interlocking into a thick, cushy, felt that resists fraying and stretching. You can cut it up and make it into bags, Christmas stockings, containers, whatever you can think of. I decided on a wine gift wrapper. Kind of overkill for a wrapper, but I guess its more of a conceptual piece. I'm curious if it has any real practical applications: perhaps insulating a bottle of mulled wine for a sleigh ride, or keeping champagne chilled.
In honor of my new country of residence, I used one of the sleeves to make a companion to the wine cozy:

Allow me to present: The wine toque!

Since being pregnant, I have lots of clothes that seem not to fit anymore. Now I know what I can do with them. I am going to make Coke koozies. :-)
